Raj moved flat in September and assumed any winter help with his bills was gone.
It turned out the date that really mattered was earlier than he thought. 🤔

🧾 What the Warm Home Discount is
The Warm Home Discount is a yearly reduction on your electricity bill, meant to help some households through the winter.
It isn’t paid to you as money. Your electricity supplier takes it off your bill instead.
For many households it can take £150 off the winter bill — without having to fill in a form.
It runs again each winter, so a household that qualifies this year may qualify again next year if nothing changes.
🤔 Why it exists
Winter is when energy use goes up: the heating stays on longer and the lights come on earlier.
For households on a tight budget, that’s often the hardest time of year to keep up with bills.
The scheme was set up to ease that pressure, by applying the help straight to the bill that grows the most.
Because it goes on the bill, the help can’t be lost, spent elsewhere or sent to the wrong account.
👀 Who can get it
For winter 2026 to 2027, what counts is your situation on one specific date: 23 August 2026.
On that day, you or your partner needed to get one of these benefits: Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit or income-related ESA.
Your supplier also needs to be part of the scheme. And this is where a lot of people slip up: your name, or your partner’s, must be on the electricity bill.
👉 CHECK THE RULES⚙️ How it’s applied
If you’re eligible, the discount usually appears on your bill without you doing anything.
Some households receive a letter first, and a few are asked to take one extra step.
The money never passes through your hands, so there’s nothing to claim back or declare later.
That small detail makes a real difference — miss it, and the discount may not arrive. 👇
🔌 Electricity, gas or both?
The discount is attached to the electricity account, not to you as a person.
If the same company supplies both your gas and your electricity, you may be able to have it taken off the gas bill instead.
Either way, it is applied by the supplier itself — there is no separate form to send to anyone else.
🌍 Where it applies
The scheme covers England, Wales and Scotland. It isn’t available in Northern Ireland.
In Scotland, some households get it automatically, while others need to apply directly to their electricity supplier.
Prepayment and pay-as-you-go meters can still qualify — the help just arrives in a different way.
Few people notice it, but the supplier you had on the qualifying date is usually the one that applies the discount.
So how do you know which group you’re in, and whether you need to do anything?
The next page explains it step by step, including what to do if a letter arrives.
